My remarks on Majority Leader Tom’s decision to not seek reelection

Senate Majority Leader Rodney Tom, D – Bellevue announced this morning that he will not be seeking reelection this year. I have known Sen. Tom since we were elected to the Legislature the same year.

Rodney has been a champion of higher education in our state. I will miss him in the Legislature. He is a great leader and a friend. As the Majority Coalition Caucus leader, he has kept our caucus focused on what matters to the people of our state.

We came into the Legislature at the same time. He was my seatmate in the House and we learned a lot from each other, sharing cramped working quarters in portables after the earthquake. I have so much respect and admiration for what he has been able to accomplish.

I hope this isn’t the last we see of Rodney Tom in an elected capacity. There will be a big void in his absence but my prayers are with him and his family. I will always consider Rodney Tom a friend and mentor.
